Topological susceptibility for the SU(3) Yang--Mills theory

    Get PDF
We present the results of a computation of the topological susceptibility in the SU(3) Yang--Mills theory performed by employing the expression of the topological charge density operator suggested by Neuberger's fermions. In the continuum limit we find r_0^4 chi = 0.059(3), which corresponds to chi=(191 \pm 5 MeV)^4 if F_K is used to set the scale. Our result supports the Witten--Veneziano explanation for the large mass of the eta'.Comment: Talk presented at Lattice2004(topology); 3 pages, 2 figure

A degrading Bouc\u2013Wen model for the hysteresis of reinforced concrete structural elements

    Get PDF
This paper presents a smooth hysteresis model for reinforced concrete (RC) structural elements based on the differential equation of the Bouc?Wen model. Stiffness degradation and strength degradation are defined by introducing a damage index that includes both dissipated energy and maximum displacement. The pinching effect acts directly on the stiffness of the system and is controlled by an activation energy. The degrading functions are connected to the actual processes with which the damage occurs, thereby giving each parameter a physical meaning. The simple formulation of the model allows a straightforward identification of the best-fitting parameters and an easy interpretation of the results. Applications to the cyclic behaviour of RC structural elements demonstrate that the model is well capable of describing complex hysteretic behaviours involving degradation and pinching effects

The off-shell Veneziano amplitude in Schnabl gauge

We give a careful definition of the open string propagator in Schnabl gauge and present its worldsheet interpretation. The propagator requires two Schwinger parameters and contains the BRST operator. It builds surfaces by gluing strips of variable width to the left and to the right of off-shell states with contracted or expanded local frames. We evaluate explicitly the four-point amplitude of off-shell tachyons. The computation involves a subtle boundary term, crucial to enforce the correct exchange symmetries. Interestingly, the familiar on-shell physics emerges even though string diagrams produce Riemann surfaces more than once. Off-shell, the amplitudes do not factorize over intermediate on-shell states.Comment: 48 pages, 10 figures. v2:acknowledgments adde

Through the assessment of the Palmar Grip Strength (FPP) it is possible to calculate the individual's muscle strength index, and with the help of the BMI calculation can assess if the individual is overweight. Time up and Go (TUG) testing is done to assess balance and risk of falls. Objective: To verify muscle strength and its relationship with BMI and balance and risk of falls in elderly women. 40 elderly women were evaluated, 20 sedentary and 20 active women selected at the academy school of the University of Rio Verde. Bilateral FPP, BMI for body composition and TUG were evaluated to assess balance. Descriptive analysis of the results was performed to calculate the mean and standard deviation. The right side PPF in sedentary volunteers presented average of 13.75 ± 10.14 Kgf and in active 17.40 ± 10.54 Kgf, an increase of 26.54% for active ones. On the left side sedentary volunteers had an average of 11,40 ± 7.50 Kgf, and in the active ones 15.05 ± 10.68 Kgf, presenting an increase of 36.32% for the active ones. BMI (kg/m2) values in sedentary volunteers were: average of 25.77 ± 43.38 and in active volunteers 28.28 ± 47.38. In the TUG test, there was a 35.74% reduction in the test time. It presented mean of 19.92 ± 7,97 s for sedentary and 12.80 ± 4,69 s in active elderly. PPF is directly linked to the level of physical activity and lower BMI and better balance.Através da avaliação da Força de Preensão Palmar (FPP) é possível calcular o índice de força muscular do indivíduo, e com a ajuda do cálculo do IMC pode avaliar se o indivíduo está com sobrepeso. O teste de Time up and Go (TUG) é feito para  avaliar o equilíbrio e risco de quedas.

    Get PDF
The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per layer is approximately 5 ns

The dramatic COVID-19 outbreak in italy is responsible of a huge drop in urological surgical activity: A multicenter observational study

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVE: Italy is facing the COVID-19 outbreak with an abrupt reorganization of its national health-system, in order to augment care provision to symptomatic patients. The sudden shift of personnel and resources towards COVID-19 care has led to the reduction of surgery, with possible severe drawbacks. The aim of the study is to describe the trend in surgical volume in urology, in Italy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-three urological units with physicians affiliated to the AGILE consortium were involved in a survey. Urologists were asked to report the amount of surgical elective procedures week-by-week, from the beginning of the emergency to the following month. RESULTS: The 33 hospitals involved in the study account, globally, for 22,945 beds and are distributed in 13/20 Italian regions. Before the outbreak, the involved urology units performed an overall amount of 1,213 procedures per week, half of which were oncological. One month later, the amount of surgery declined by 78%. Lombardy, the first region with positive-cases, experienced a 94% reduction. The decrease in oncological and non-oncological surgical activity was 35,9% and 89%, respectively. The trend of the decline showed a delay of roughly 2 weeks for the other regions. CONCLUSION: Italy, the country with the highest fatality rate from COVID-19, is experiencing a sudden decline in surgical activity. It is inversely related to the increase in COVID-19 care, with potential harm particularly in the oncological field. The Italian experience can be helpful for future surgical pre-planning in other countries not so hardly hit by the disease yet

Confinement, chiral symmetry, and the lattice

Two crucial properties of QCD, confinement and chiral symmetry breaking, cannot be understood within the context of conventional Feynman perturbation theory. Non-perturbative phenomena enter the theory in a fundamental way at both the classical and quantum level. Over the years a coherent qualitative picture of the interplay between chiral symmetry, quantum mechanical anomalies, and the lattice has emerged and is reviewed here.Comment: 126 pages, 36 figures.
